Patch Panel Rules

The Patch Panel is a forum for IT people: admins, helpdesk, engineers, and anyone who has been handed a problem and told to make it go away. These are the rules. They are short, because the point is a forum worth reading, not a rulebook worth studying.

1. Ask the obvious question

Nothing here is too basic. Everyone was new once, and the person who asks the question everybody was quietly wondering about does the whole forum a favour. Nobody gets told to read the manual.

2. Say what you already tried

The error message, the version, the operating system, and what happened when you tried the obvious fix. A question with those details usually gets answered the first time. One without them gets four replies asking for them.

3. Answer like you would want to be answered

Explain the fix, not just the command. “Run this” helps once; “run this, because the service holds the file open” helps forever. Disagree with the answer, never with the person. Harassment, hate speech, threats and personal attacks are not a moderation debate: they close the account.

4. Never post anything that identifies your employer or your users

Redact before you paste: hostnames, internal IP ranges, domain names, usernames, ticket numbers, licence keys, and anything from a log that names a real person. This protects you as much as them. If a screenshot needs three boxes drawn on it, draw them.

5. Never post a credential

Passwords, API keys, tokens, connection strings, certificates. If one does get posted, tell a moderator and rotate it — assume it is public the moment it is submitted, because it is.

6. Keep it legal and keep it above board

No piracy, no licence circumvention, no asking how to get into a system you do not administer. Security discussion is welcome — how an attack works, how to detect it, how to defend against it. Working exploits aimed at somebody else’s estate are not.

7. No advertising, no signature spam

Recommending a tool you actually use is not advertising; it is the reason people come here. Posting to promote your product, your agency or your affiliate link is. If you have a commercial interest in what you are recommending, say so in the post. And link to the vendor’s own site at its real address — not Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, Temu, TikTok, Facebook Marketplace or anything like them, and not a mirror, a shortener or a download aggregator. Those listings are where counterfeit hardware and repackaged installers come from, and a lookalike download page is how a good deal of what The Cache writes about arrives in the first place.

Posts with a link wait for a moderator before they appear. That is not a judgement on you or on the link: it is how the rule above is kept without anyone losing a question to a spam filter. Your post is saved, we are told at once, and it goes up as soon as it is read. If you want something cleared in advance, or you think a link was held wrongly, write to us and ask — that is what it is for.

8. One topic per problem

Post in the board that fits, give the topic a title that describes the problem rather than the panic, and start a new topic rather than reviving a three-year-old one with something unrelated. “Exchange 2019 stops accepting mail after the December update” beats “URGENT!! please help”.

9. Advice here comes with no warranty

Everything posted is somebody’s best effort, not a support contract. Read it, understand it, test it somewhere that does not matter, and take a backup first. Section 6 of the Terms says this in more formal language.

How this is enforced

Your first few posts wait for a moderator. That is a spam measure and not a comment on your writing; it stops once you are established. After that, moderators may edit or remove a post that breaks these rules, and will usually say why. Persistent or deliberate breaches get an account closed. Anything involving a leaked credential or someone’s personal data gets dealt with immediately and asked about afterwards.

Seen something that breaks these rules? Report the post, or write to contact@keh-tech.net. Disagree with a moderator? Same address, and bring the link.

These rules sit alongside the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy, which cover the site as a whole.
